How To: Build your shot list

Having trouble determining what you want shot for the big day? No worries! Part of every wedding package is help building your wedding day shot list if you need it!

 

Some things to keep in mind when making your shot list:

  • How much time do I have for portraits?
  • Do I want pictures at the ceremony site or reception site?
  • Which family members are crucial to get in pictures?
  • Who traveled the farthest? Do I need pictures with them?
  • Do I want pictures of me getting ready? Of the room before anyone gets there?

 

Once you have a majority of these questions answered, you are ready to make your rough draft. Start with the easy stuff first:

  • Bridal Party
  • Parents of the happy couple
  • Grandparents of the happy couple
  • Guests of honor
  • Siblings
  • Best friends
  • Most important: THE COUPLE!

For your sake, list the names of the people you are listing. It helps both the coordinator and the photographer know who to call up there.

Next, what about all of the work done to make this beautiful occasion happen?

  • Décor
  • Ceremony setup (unity candle before it is lit, programs, etc)
  • Reception setup (including cake, tables and chairs, and any unique elements used at the wedding)
  • Unique things that make this wedding you!

Now that we have the essential family pictures and the décor, lets talk creative and photojournalistic you!

  • I saw this shot on pinterest I want
  • I saw this shot in a magazine I want
  • I saw this shot in my head that I want
  • I saw this shot online that I want
  • I wonder if my photographer has ________________ props? (ask before the wedding!)

From here, you are all set! It is a great idea to discuss this list about a month ahead of your wedding with your photographer (me) to go over time restrictions, props needing to be procured, and the availability and access to key spots at the venues.
